"Wall Street Journal" (Mark Richardson) review of "The Ascension"
‘The Ascension’ by Sufjan Stevens Review: Darkness Meets the Divine
The indie artist’s latest is a lengthy solo record that offers a harrowing view of the world.
By Mark RichardsonSept. 21, 2020 5:27 pm ET
The most important variable in the music of indie rock singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, the element that makes one project different from the next, is scale. His oeuvre includes everything from delicate folk songs about spiritual belief to a symphonic piece about the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Mr. Stevens's last solo album, 2016's "Carrie & Lowell," named for his mother and stepfather, offers a heartbreakingly intimate portrait of a family with a mentally ill parent, while a 2017 release created with composer Nico Muhly, drummer James McAlister and multi-instrumentalist Bryce Dessner called "Planetarium" was inspired by the cosmos. With each release, whether it's a solo record or one of his many collaborations, the first question is what size Mr. Stevens, now age 45, will draw his frame. From there, depending on how much that boundary takes in, he fills in details.
Early in his career, Mr. Stevens trained his eye on two of America's states. "Michigan," from 2003, documented life in the state where he grew up and includes personal reflections alongside homages to the natural beauty of the region. "Illinois," from 2005, paid tribute to the Land of Lincoln with songs about figures ranging from poet Carl Sandburg to serial killer John Wayne Gacy. These dense and sprawling albums—both were double LPs, and featured simple acoustic numbers next to trilling chamber pieces drawing from classical minimalism—hopped from one locale to the next, using ordinary sites as settings for extraordinary stories. By looking closely at these places, his work seemed to celebrate the spirit of civic engagement and was hopeful about what people working together might accomplish.
On "The Ascension" (Asthmatic Kitty), Mr. Stevens's new solo album, out Friday, he zooms the camera out and is horrified by what he sees. As with his 2010 LP, "The Age of Adz," he constructed this album with synthesizers and electronics, most of which he plays himself. This record's production evokes clouds, sunlight, the fogged landscapes of ancient myths. Sometimes the percussion is heavy, but it comes and goes; these aren't pop songs, and though he has an ear for a catchy tune, he mostly leaves the hooks to the side. "The Ascension" is the darkest record of Mr. Stevens's career, portraying a world where the only escape from pain is death itself. There are flashes of hope and levity, but they are few, and there's no reason to think that the forces of light will carry the day.
While some of the wrenching conflict found on "The Ascension" can be traced to the failures of mankind—"Video Game" pushes against life lived inside of screens; "Death Star" suggests that humans have irreversibly befouled Earth—the core issue running through the record is a crisis of faith. More than half the tracks mention the word "love," usually referring to its absence, and it's rarely clear if Mr. Stevens, who identifies as Christian, is talking about the human or the divine. The "you" that many songs are addressed to is equally mysterious. There are no identifiable people in this world, no characters drawn with any detail. It seems to take place inside of a single person's head, and the lack of connection—both spiritual and interpersonal—fuels a despair that can make for an overwhelming listen.
Mr. Stevens almost always sings in a whisper. It's a considered whisper, and he's given a lot of thought to how to best use his limited range. On the opening "Make Me an Offer I Cannot Refuse," he seems to be calling out to God, asking for salvation, and he layers his voice into a choir. A similar swell of voices runs through "Run Away With Me," a fragile ballad that sounds like a transcription of a prayer delivered under one's breath ("And I will bring you life / A new communion / With a paradise that brings / The truth of light within"). Despite the production's softness, there's a gritty force to these songs, a feeling that what we're hearing desperately needs to come out.
"Tell Me You Love Me" opens with "My love, I've lost my faith in everything"—it's one of the record's most ethereal tracks, with every sound bathed in a warm mist designed to catch the light, but the words can't match the warmth of the arrangement. Where sharing feelings once offered a path to happiness, lines like "What's the point of it if morning turns into night?" suggest that now it's too late. The following "Die Happy," whose only lyrics are the phrase "I wanna die happy," adds grim punctuation.
Late in the record, "Goodbye to All That" offers the first real respite from the overriding desolation. Singing over heavy drums, Mr. Stevens describes being alone in a car and experiencing an epiphany that leads to gratitude ("Now that it's too late to have died a young man / Well I'm just glad that I'm still alive") but the song's joy is fleeting. The title track is a harsh assessment of the possibility of change and ends with the words "What now?," while the closing "America," a true epic, is filled with biblical imagery about betrayal as it moves from a gentle ballad to a crashing wall of sound to a quiet drone that fades into nothingness.
"The Ascension" is 81 minutes long and is, by design, tightly focused, both musically and thematically. While the album sustains a mood, it's an uncomfortable one to inhabit for almost an hour and a half. It's hard to endure in a single listen, though Mr. Stevens's conviction makes you want to try. "The Ascension" is supposed to be difficult and unsettling, a harrowing record for frightening times.
The top 3 unranked prospects in each division. (Mens BW-MW)
In order to qualify, they must be currently unranked, be under the age of 32, and had already made their UFC debut. I apologize in advance for my bad grammar.
If there’s anyone you think was snubbed or is over ranked, feel free to discuss.
1. Jack Shore (13-0)(2-0 UFC) - Shore is a dominant grappler with a suffocating top game. He’s only 25 years old and already holds an impressive record of 13-0 with 12 finishes. There’s alot of great wrestlers and anti-grapplers at BW, so I look forward to seeing someone test his striking.
2. Nathaniel Wood (16-4)(4-1 UFC) - Wood is a very well rounded prospect. He entered the UFC primarily known as a striker, but would go on to win his first 3 bouts all by submission. He recently learned a tough lesson getting stopped by John Dodson but would bounce back with a UD win over the debuting John Casteneda.
3. Sean O’Malley (12-1)(4-1 UFC) - Even after suffering his 1st loss to Marlon Vera, I still believe Sean O’Malley to be one of the better prospects at 135. He’s a dynamic striker who utilizes great feints, defensive footwork, and constant stance switches to keep his opponents guessing. His biggest questions going forward will be surrounding his durability. I think IF he can come back healthy, he’ll have a bright future.
1. Mosvar Evloev (13-0)(3-0 UFC) - Mosvar is a 3-time M-1 Global BW champ. He’s not the biggest 145’er but he makes up for it by being extremely well rounded and having great cardio. He puts on a relentless pace with both his striking and grappling. He’s coming off a win over Mike Grundy where he showed phenomenal scrambling ability and submission defense. He plans on making the move to BW but I see him as a problem in either division.
2. Bryce Mitchell (13-0)(3-0UFC) - Thugnasty has an excellent top game. He really values position over submission or in his words “he cooks em to the bone” before applying his submissions. Once he’s on top, he rarely gives his opponent any chance to get up or advance position. In his last fight vs Charles Rosa, he was able to take Charles down within the first 15 seconds of each round and keep him there for the remainder of each. On the feet he’s offensively limited but is fairly sound defensively. I’d have him at the #1 spot but I feel FW has a ton of good strikers with great tdd whom could give Bryce trouble as he try’s to advance the ranks.
3. Hakeem Dowadu (11-1-1)(4-1 UFC) - Hakeem is a really sharp striker. He has great thai skills and really works the legs/body well with his kicks. He’s also good defensively where he ranks first in the entire division in significant strike differential and is top 5 in fewest strikes absorbed per minute. He takes on another great prospect in Zubaira Tukhugov at UFC 253.
1. Arman Tsarukyan (15-2)(2-1 UFC) - Arman is an incredibly developed and well rounded fighter for being only 23 years old. He hasn’t taken it easy in his first 3 UFC bouts, getting matched up with Makhachev, OAM, and Davi Ramos. He showed great defensive and offensive grappling against all three opponents. He was very impressive in his last fight when he shut down Davi Ramos by using his kickboxing and well timed level changes.
2. Brad Riddell (8-1)(2-0 UFC) - Brad is a former kickboxer who amassed a 58-9 record. He hold’s a win over John Wayne Parr and close split decision loss against the Glory welterweight champion, Cedric Doumbe. Brad is a powerful technician on feet. He utilizes feints well, has heavy hands and a very solid kicking game. On the ground he’s very hard to hold down, which was evident in his fight with Magomed Mustafaev. Magomed was able to take him down a few times but he got back to his feet right away and eventually out worked him. He even reversed several of Magomed’s attempts to finish the fight in top position. For a better breakdown here’s The Fight Site’s Article on him.
3. Damir Ismagulov (19-1)(3-0 UFC) - much like Tsarukyan, Damir is very well rounded. He’s a 3-time M1 global LW champion. He’s very fluid and defensively sound on the feet. He does a good job of staying long and peppers his opponents with shots while staying out of range of whatever’s coming back. Overall he’s very talented and he knows how to win rounds by mixing up his striking with his grappling.
4. Rafael Fiziev (8-1)(2-1 UFC) - I know I said I’d only be doing the top 3 prospects, but there’s no way I could leave this man out. Fiziev is the head striking coach at Tiger Muay Thai. He has a 39-8 professional kickboxing record aswell as a 29-4 pro muay thai record. He brings an aggressive muay thai style to mma but he still manages to remain solid defensively throughout. He’s known for his matrix like head movement and pull backs, as seen here. Through his first 3 fights he’s maintained a 100% take down defense rate. In his fight with Alex White he stuffed all 11 of his TD attempts. If he can keep that up, he’ll be a hard out for most of the division.
1. Khamzat Chimaev (8-0)(2-0 UFC) - Khamzat’s run up to this point has been dominant to say the least. The Chechen grappling phenom has finished all 8 of his fights inside the first 2 rounds. From what I’ve seen in his pre-ufc fights, he’s not bad on the feet either. He’s light on his feet and appears to have good timing/power in his strikes. Here’s him timing a beautiful uppercut for the KO. Although his level of opposition isn’t the best, it’s the manner in which he’s dominated them that’s got him the #1 spot.
2. Miguel Baeza (9-0 2-0UFC) - Beaza is a smooth striker hailing from south Florida. He earned his way into the UFC by winning a hard fought battle against Victor Reyna on the contender series. In his UFC debut he chopped Hector Aldana down with leg kicks before finishing him with ground & pound. He followed that up my knocking out Matt Brown in May. He’ll need to improve his defense though, particularly his head movement if he’d to like to continue advancing the ranks. Luckily being only 27 years old, he’s got time to do so.
3. Sean Brady (13-0 3-0 UFC) - Brady is a very well rounded fighter from Philadelphia. He’s solid on the feet and on the ground. He’s a bjj blackbelt and has a very good mounted guillotine. He takes on Christian Aguilera next weekend.
1. Brendan Allen (15-3)(3-0 UFC) - Brendan is a 24 year old, former LFA champ and DWTNCS contract winner. He’s a phenomenal grappler and RNC specialist, getting 6 of his 8 subs that way. He most recently won a gritty FOTN performance against fellow prospect Kyle Daukas. He takes on Ian Heinisch November 7th.
2. Rodolfo Vieira (7-0)(2-0 UFC)- Rodolfo is one of the most accomplished grapplers in the whole UFC. He’s a 4 time Jiu Jitsu world champ and a 7 time world cup champion. Physically he’s freak of nature that could give even Paulo Costa a run for his money. All 7 of his wins are by finish, 6 submissions 1 knockout.
3. Kevin Holland. (18-5)(5-2 UFC) Kevin is wild character both inside and outside of the octagon. I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen his debut fight vs Thiago Santos to check it out. He’s good everywhere and has no obvious weakness. He made his debut late 2018 and already has 7 ufc bouts under his belt. He holds a TKO win over welterweight contender Geoff Neal. Most recently he’s scored a KO win over Joaquin Buckley with a beautiful straight right.
Honorable mentions Ricky Simon, Brett Johns, Montel Jackson, Casey Kenney, Lerone Murphy, Zubaira Tukhugov, Grant Dawson, Yusuff Zallal, Nasrat Haqparast, Joe Solecki, Renato Moicano, ERICK SILVA, Sean Brady, Jake Mathews, Makhmud Muradov.
Too old to qualify as prospects but could still make a solid run - Roani Barcelos, Leonardo Santos, Khama Worthy, Francisco Trinaldo, Mark O’Madsen, Daniel Rodriguez, Claudio Silva, Muslim Salikhov.
Promising fighters yet to make their debut. -Umar Nurmagomedov, Manel Kape. TJ Laramie.
